In a recent development, the association has approached the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri Siddaramaiah, seeking an extension of the deadline for the payment of Professional Tax under The Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1976. This article delves into the reasons behind this request and its implications.

Detailed Analysis

Background: The Professional Tax, mandated by The Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1976, is obligatory for individuals engaged in various professions, trades, or employments. The current fiscal year's deadline for payment stands at April 30, 2024.

Technical Glitches: However, the designated website for Professional Tax payments has encountered persistent technical issues. Users have reported slow performance and frequent errors, rendering the service largely inaccessible. The situation has led to significant inconvenience for taxpayers, hindering timely compliance.

Request for Extension: Recognizing the gravity of the situation, KSCAA has petitioned the Chief Minister for a 30-day extension of the deadline. This extension would alleviate the burden on taxpayers and provide much-needed relief to the trade and industry sectors grappling with the website's inefficiencies.

Importance of Timely Tax Compliance: As stewards of the accounting profession, KSCAA emphasizes the importance of timely tax compliance in sustaining economic activities within the state. Adhering to tax deadlines is critical for maintaining regulatory compliance and fostering a conducive business environment.

Appeal to Government: In their appeal to the Chief Minister, KSCAA represents not only the interests of Chartered Accountants but also those of the broader trade and industry community in Karnataka. The association underscores the significance of the government's intervention in addressing the challenges faced by taxpayers.

Herein, we are presenting before your good selves for your kind consideration, an issue regarding extension of due date for payment of Professional Tax under The Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1976 ("the Act").

Introduction:

Profession Tax is required to be paid by every person exercising any profession or calling or is engaged in any trade or holds any appointment, public or private as specified in the Schedule to the Act eg: traders, doctors, clinics, manufacturers, service providers etc. The due date for payment of Professional Tax for the FY 2024-25 is 30 April 2024. However, for the past few days the functioning of the website designated for Professional Tax payments has been marred by persistent issues, including slow performance and recurrent errors displaying the message "The service is unavailable". In light of these challenges, we humbly request your intervention to extend the deadline by 30 days, thereby affording much-needed relief to the trade and industry sectors grappling with this inconvenience.

As guardians of the accounting profession and representatives of various sectors of trade and industry, we recognize the significance of timely tax compliance for sustaining economic activities in the state.

Taking into consideration the hardships caused, we the members of Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association, on behalf of the entire Chartered Accountants community and also on behalf of the trade and industry in the state of Karnataka appeal to your good selves to kindly consider our above request.
